An upgraded version of low cost Aakash tablet is ready for launch. Packed with more features and enhanced speed, Aakash II tablets would be released some time soon.
“Unlike other tablet devices, Aakash can also be used to create computer programs, in Python, C, C++ and Scilab,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said, adding that the tablet can be further used for accessing e-governance services.
The government has approved the specifications of the upgraded version of the tablets submitted by Datawind, to IIT-Bombay for testing.
“The government has approved the specifications,” Datawind CEO Sunit Singh Tuli confirmed.
HRD Ministry says that the launch of Aakash 2 could be around the first week of July.
An April report stated that Aakash 2 will have improved hardware with Google’s Android 4.0 OS, a 7-inch capacitive multitouch screen and 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor. The tablet will come with 256MB of RAM and 2GB flash storage, and Android 2.3, which is upgradeable to Android 4.0 about six to eight weeks after delivery.
The Aakash project faced several issues due to the differences between IIT-Rajasthan and Datawind. IIT-Rajasthan was then removed from the project, and the Aakash project was transferred to the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay.
